Coupon Marketing Help: The Offer

Coupon Tips
  1. Make it clear: Certain discounts, like percentage discounts, on coupons are less effective for products and services whose prices are not well known. "Twenty percent off" is not enticing if the original price might be $20 or $200.
  2. Make it valuable: SaveLocally subscribers have no limit on the number of coupon they can post, but more than six or eight may reduce the coupons' perceived value.
  3. Make some general: Be sure to post at least one coupon that anyone can use. For example, only a small percentage of a pizza parlor's customers order specialty pizzas, so a discount on these will have a similarly small response; but a coupon for $2 off any large pizza can be used by anyone. These more-general coupons will be more effective at increasing business.
  4. Information works too: Free information can in itself be a coupon incentive, and can also help build customer loyalty. An auto-repair shop, for instance, can offer a booklet on car maintenance, and a hair parlor might offer one on beauty tips. These now only attract new customers but make the business look like an authority. What's more, the booklet or brochure can tout other products and services and attract further sales.
  5. Make it compelling: Your coupon offer should tell your customers what you can do for them -- save money or time, get helpful information, improve their lifestyle, give quality care or service.
  6. Make it bold: Give your coupon a bold offer with value that consumers will recognize instantly:
- Buy one, get one free!
- $5 off a haircut
- Free appetizer with any entree
